Destructive Desire: A Case Study Of Reuben And Samson

REUBEN

“Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power .”(Genesis 49:3)

It is one thing for you to have a divine and excellent destiny, it is another thing for the destiny to be fulfilled. Reuben, the son of Jacob, had one of the most excellent destinies.

The Bible in Genesis 49:3, explains the height of his destiny.

Indeed, it was a glorious, wonderful and promising one. But the very day Reuben got intoxicated with his position in his father’s house, and went into s!xual immorality with his father’s wife (Genesis 35:22), he used his own hands to destroy his life, destiny and future.

As Jacob’s first child, he was supposed to be great in life, but instead, he received a curse from his father.

” Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then thou defiled it: he went up to my couch”.

Our parents’ blessing is very important in the preparation and fulfilment of our destinies.

SAMSON

” For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”(Judges 13:5)
Samson was an anointed man of God.

In fact, his birth was announced by the angel before he was born. He was born to capture and defeat the enemy of God’s people, the Philistines (Judges 13:5). His destiny was to be a mighty man but he was weak in his mind, he easily gave in to lust.

He yielded himself to the desire that destroyed him and shortened his destiny. Despite the instruction from God for the Israelites not to marry uncircumcised people, he desired to marry an uncircumcised woman – a Philistine. His parents warned him but he refused to yield to their correction.

That was the beginning of his downfall. He went into a harlot and committed immorality with her Judges 16:1

There are certain desires that are prompted by the lust of the flesh. They are so destructive to lives and destinies. Children of God are commanded not to gratify the lust of the flesh but to rather be controlled by the spirit of God.

Samson started well but was not careful of destructive desires. Consequently, he ended his ministerial anointing on the laps of Delilah, who was not even his.  What should we learn from the account of Samson and Delilah?

We must crucify the flesh daily as children of God, read and meditate on his word and pray aggressively. This means overcoming lustful desires with anything attached to them.

Are you desiring anything today against the will of God? Surrender your wish and aspiration to God and He will give you the best in life.

PRAYER

  • Every destructive desire in me, lose your hold in Jesus’ name.
  • Blood of Jesus, purify me from every pollution in Jesus’ name.
  • Every curse placed on my destiny, break in Jesus’ name.
  • I shall not destroy myself, in the name of Jesus.
